Memorial Day, Graduation, 4th of July, Oh My!

As the weather gets warmer and the school year comes to an end our weekends are filled with summer barbecues and sugary cocktails. It can be tricky to eat healthy when we are away from home or feeding a big crowd. Here are some helpful tips and tricks to eat better at upcoming summer parties.

If you are hosting:

  • Chicken, shrimp, or steak skewers are a great alternative to the traditional hamburger or hot dog. They are easy to make and can be thrown on the grill with whatever other food you may be making.

  • If you are serving hamburgers and hot dogs buy LEAN protein. Another great alternative to the traditional brot is a turkey or chicken brot. (These can be found at most grocery stores)

  • Offer lettuce as an alternative to a bun. Butter lettuce or a head of iceberg lettuce that you can peal. It adds a crunch to any meal.

  • Vegetable trays are another great appetizer option. Paired with a Greek yogurt based vegetable dip is always a tasty treat. Trader Joes has a delicious cilantro Greek yogurt dip that is perfect for any party.

If you are attending:

  • Offer to bring a vegetable tray!

  • Have half the bun with your hot dog or hamburger or skip it all together.

  • Cucumbers are a great alternative for tortilla chips. Skip the chip and use cucumber slices when dipping in guacamole or salsa.
